What is Axite?
Axite is a neurotechnology software company in Leiden, the Netherlands, and a spin-off of Leiden University. It builds remote brain monitoring software: the Axite App (NeuroJournal), which records brain activity at home with a consumer-grade EEG headset and a smartphone, and the Axite Platform, a dashboard that shows the results to researchers and clinicians.
What is the Axite App (NeuroJournal)?
The Axite App (NeuroJournal) is Axite's app for remote brain monitoring. It records brain activity at home with a consumer-grade EEG headset and the person's own smartphone, and sends the recordings to the cloud for processing. The results appear in the Axite Platform.
What is the Axite Platform?
The Axite Platform is the dashboard where researchers and clinicians see the results from the Axite App (NeuroJournal). It shows processed brain measures for each participant over time, and the data can be exported.
Which EEG headsets does the Axite App (NeuroJournal) work with?
The Axite App (NeuroJournal) works with Muse and BrainBit headsets. Axite makes software only and is hardware agnostic, so more headsets can be added.
How is Axite different from other at-home EEG apps?
Axite analyses three kinds of EEG signal together: brain rhythms, event-related potentials (ERPs) and event-related desynchronisation and synchronisation (ERD/ERS). Most at-home EEG products look at brain rhythms only. The Axite App (NeuroJournal) uses the person's own smartphone taps as the time lock for ERPs, so everyday phone use becomes stimulus-locked brain data without a lab task.
Does the Axite App (NeuroJournal) work outside the lab?
Yes. The Axite App (NeuroJournal) is built for real-world recordings at home, with noise reduction and anomaly detection trained on Axite's own dataset of deliberately noisy at-home EEG.
Who uses Axite?
Today, researchers who need long-term EEG outside the lab, and pharma, biotech and CRO teams who want objective cognitive measures in their studies. Axite is working toward MDR certification in the EU and FDA clearance in the US, so that people with epilepsy and other brain disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, can use the Axite App (NeuroJournal) and the Axite Platform in their care, starting with epilepsy.
Is the Axite App (NeuroJournal) a medical device?
No. The Axite App (NeuroJournal) and the Axite Platform are currently offered for Research Use Only. They do not diagnose, treat or predict any condition. Axite is working toward certification under the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) and FDA clearance in the US.
What does Axite cost?
A single-seat subscription costs EUR 19 per month, or EUR 16 per month billed annually, and includes the Axite App (NeuroJournal) and the Axite Platform. The app is free to download. Headsets are bought directly from the manufacturer. Studies for pharma, biotech and CROs are priced per project.
What data is Axite's software built on?
Axite's software is built on an exclusive licence to over 400 hours of EEG data from Leiden University research, plus Axite's own at-home recordings.
Who founded Axite?
Axite was founded by Charlotte Franenberg (CEO) and Ruchella Kock (CTO). The company grew out of CODELAB at Leiden University's Faculty of Social Sciences. Scientific advisor is Dr Arko Ghosh (Leiden University).
Who has invested in Axite?
Axite received a EUR 350,000 investment from UNIIQ, the proof-of-concept fund for South Holland, and earlier funding from NWO Take Off. Axite won the UNIIQ Brick Award in December 2025.
Is Axite the same as Axite Labs?
No. Axite (Axite B.V., Leiden, Netherlands) makes the Axite App (NeuroJournal) and the Axite Platform, and is not related to Axite Labs.
