Brain monitoring between clinic visits, starting with epilepsy.

Over 40% of people with epilepsy experience cognitive impairment, and cognitive side effects are one of the main reasons anti-seizure medication gets changed. Today clinicians titrate on what patients remember to report. Axite is building the measurement that fills the gap between visits.

What we are building

01 · The problem

The gap between visits is where clinicians lose signal

Cognitive fog, fatigue and attention problems are reported from memory, weeks after they happened. A clinician needs an objective record of how cognition changed since the last consultation, not a diary.

02 · The measurement

Short home recordings with a consumer-grade headset

The patient records a few minutes of EEG at home, guided by the app. Phone use time-locks the signal, so the recording captures everyday brain activity rather than a test situation.

03 · The output

A summary a clinician can read in minutes

The deliverable is a short page of trends in attention and cognitive load over time, designed to fit a 15 to 20 minute consultation. Raw data stays available for those who want it.

04 · The path

Certified as a medical device before it reaches patients

NeuroJournal is being developed under the EU Medical Device Regulation as Class IIa software, Rule 11(b), with a quality system under ISO 13485 in progress. EU certification comes first, with a US filing on the resulting technical file.

Clinical partners

Developed with neurologists and researchers at SEIN, LUMC and Leiden University, and with patient organisation EpilepsieNL.

Regulatory context

The EMA guideline on trials in epileptic disorders (Rev. 3, in force since September 2025) expects effects on cognition, sleep and reaction time to be studied.

Why epilepsy first

A clear, detectable EEG signal, a high unmet need and clinical partners willing to validate the measurement. Further neurological conditions follow the same path.
